So it's going well. =)

Weigh-in
Today was my week 23 weigh in, and after last week's fiasco of weight gain, I changed the day I weighed in. I thought it would be better to weigh-in the day BEFORE date night rather than the day AFTER. Plus, Saturday's are so very very busy, it would be nice to get rid of one Saturday activity.

So I changed my weigh-in day to Thursday. And BEHOLD! The fabulous results!!!

Original Weight: 165.8lbs
Total Weight loss: 27.6lbs
Today's weight loss: 2.6lbs
Today's weight: 138.2lbs

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!!!! Let this be a lesson to all and sundry; choose your weigh-in date with care. This weigh-in marked the end of the plateau I've been on ever since I started exercising. I started out walking for 22 minutes and running for 8 minutes, and I have worked up to 50 minutes of running and ten minutes of walking. FINALLY I'm seeing the results of all that incredibly hard work, starting with today's weigh-in.

food

I've been on weight watcher's now for 21 weeks - Holy toledo! - and have only just recently discovered some wonderful things.

I like to have cereal and milk. This costs me at least 4 points - and if I add a banana to it, that's another 2 points. SIX POINTS for breakfast! Right now I only have 18 points per day, so that's WAY too many points for breakfast.

However, recently I've discovered this cereal:

3/4 cup Total whole wheat flakes are only ONE POINT.

Furthermore, because of the delightful problem I've been having on long runs I've been reducing the amount of dairy I've consuming. Though I haven't been able to completely stay clear of Bryer's fat free or weight watcher's one point bars yet...but anyway, I have been drinking soy milk. Yesterday, I was THRILLED to discover 8th Continent Complete Soy Milk which is only ONE POINT per cup. ONE POINT!

This means that I can have cereal and milk for only 2 points as opposed to at least 4. SCORE!

Today was my week 21 weigh in, and FINALLY I lost a decent amount of weight. Though I just finished my monthly and I always lose about 2lbs after that.

I talked with my ww leader after she'd looked at the two weeks of trackers. She said I was doing really exceptionally well staying on programme. She really couldn't figure out why I'm not losing weight. I mentioned that *everyone* says it's because I'm gaining muscle, but she said you don't gain muscle that quickly. My weight loss slowed the very week I started running, and she said it takes a couple of weeks at least for that to happen if it's the creation of muscle that's causing it. Bizarre.

So she said, "Either you need to *not* eat any of the bonus points, and stick as close to your 19 daily points as you can, OR you need to eat *every single one* of your points." She said in the cases she's seen like this there's no way to tell which one will work for which person, you just have to experiment and see which one your body needs.

This week I'm trying to stay as close to my 19 points and use as few of my bonus points as possible. I am actually hoping this is *not* what my body needs, as, to be frank, I don't think it's very healthy to eat so little! And, furthermore, I do NOT want to train my body to think that it's ok to eat so little as that means that in the future, when I'm in the "Lifetime" phase of WW, I won't be able to eat the bonus points then.

And let me make myself clear, I *WILL NOT* eat only 19 points a week for the rest of my life. That is no way to live. There needs to be *SOME* wiggle room in the programme. I fully intend to be able to eat Chinese food once in a while, or to be able to have a packet of chips....oh my, it's SO hard not having barbeque chips. I love them so much.

Not that I intend gorging myself when I've completed my weight loss, but I will not live on plain salad for the rest of my life. It's mentally unhealthy.

Trying to lose weight has certainly taught me what my trigger foods are. I have slowly learned to eat only a small piece of chocolate or pie or whatever...but I know for a fact that if I ever have a sweet barbeque chip I will eat the whole bag. It's an absolute trigger food for me. Who knew? =)

How I Exercise

I thought I'd do a post on how I exercise, since I've actually started again and seem to be somewhat of a routine. Although it appears to be causing my weight loss to slow DRAMATICALLY and IRRITATINGLY, I shall persevere and see what happens. But it still makes me mad.

Anyway, I've been using a running programme from
coolrunning.com
It's the couch-to-5k programme you can see there on the main page.

The version I use is the one put together by Robert Ullrey. It's awesome because he tells you exactly when to start and stop so you don't have to think about it. You can find the podcasts here:

ALSO!!!! For those of you who suffer from shinsplints, I have some wonderful news. =) I, too, used to suffer from shinsplints, Crippling ones. Awful ones. When I ran the 5k turkey trot last Thanksgiving day, I could hardly walk for a couple of months afterwards. Oh my good gracious gravy, it hurt. When I woke up in the morning I would have to shuffle around for the first five minutes, not lifting my feet off the floor, because it HURT!! This caused me to stop running, and I've only just started again.

This time around (though admittedly, I'm only about three weeks in....) things are much better. What's different this summer???

No flip-flops.

No kidding. I bought another pair of athletic shoes. I wear one while I'm running, and one when I'm not...and my legs and feet feel SOOOOO much better. I am really really hopeful that this will nix any shinsplint pain I have.


Another thing I've purchased recently which has made my life sooo much better: a sports bra. It's wonderful to be running and not have to hike up my irritating bra straps.


Next to buy: Socks. My socks are years and years old. At least ten years. They're worn thin and some have holes. The elastic is gone so as I'm running they slip down my ankles and end up under my feet. GAH!!! I believe today I will buy more socks.

Also, at some point in time I may start saving for a new ipod. Mine is the first generation original Ipod. Yes. The ORIGINAL one. The first one that came out. Yes, that one. It's fabulous! It still works! There's nothing wrong with it!

But it would be nice to have a smaller one. Mine's so heavy. I have a holder thing that you put on your arm, but the original ipod is so heavy it drags the holder down, so I've ended up tucking the ipod inside my bra. I know. Sorry. That's probably tmi for you. But it keeps the ipod safe and I don't have to expend irritation and energy hiking up the ipod holder on my arm all the time.

Also, I need some kind of sweat-wiping thing. My arm/hand/shirt just doesn't cut the mustard.


So anyway, enough waffle! Here's my exercise programme
I exercise Tues, Thurs and Sat because I work Mon, Weds, Fri.

I am currently (as of today) on Robert Ullrey's week 2 podcast. I was on week 1, off and on, for SEVERAL months. I kept starting and then stopping because of shin splints. With my new athletic shoes on my feet I've been able to get to week 2.

I have to say, week 2 isn't so bad. I've heard that when you reach week 4 or something like that, the pace picks up considerably and it gets exponentially more difficult. But right now, week 2 is ok. I like it because although it's a 90 second rather than a 60 second run, there's only 6 intervals rather than 8.

Except when you're in the middle of the penultimate 90 second run on the week 2 podcast and your ipod spontaneously decides - in the middle of your run - to switch to the beginning of the week 6 podcast instead. GAH!!!


Well, I could probably waffle on forever, but right now I need to take Andrew swimming.

I'm SO annoyed and frustrated I'm at the point of thinking "Ok. So I'm not going to exercise anymore." How the heck am I meant to be healthy and lose weight if exercising means I don't lose any weight???

I weighed in yesterday and had only lost 0.2lbs and was LIVID because I'd worked so hard. Talk about disappointed!!!!
This day was the backlash. Me being sulky etc. I could not believe how fast those points racked up. The book group stuff was an estimation. Based on this, I believe I ate an average of 60-80 points PER DAY before I went on Weight Watchers

And now I'm down to 1/4 of that. Yikes. No wonder I felt like I was starving to death when I first went on it. =D That first week I was HUNGRY!!! It took a good few weeks for the persistent hungry feeling to stop. Now I'm only hungry from time to time. I think my stomach has finally shrunk to a manageable size and it doesn't take so much to fill it. =D

All I needed was another 1/2 cup (there's 1/2 cup yoghurt in the green smoothie) and that would have been only 1 more point - and I certainly had it to spare after my exercise. Oh well.

It's Linger Longer at church today. I'm really nervous about it. Wish me luck. =)

Chocolate pumpkin muffin batter - 2 points
I guessed. I licked a bit off my fingers and the bowl. I figured it was better to overestimate the points than underestimate.
1 cup milk - 2 points
1/2 egg boat - 2 points
Andrew made egg boats again. That young man loves to cook. =)
1 chocolate pumpkin mini muffin - 1 point
Green Smoothie - 4 points
Various pickin's at the Linger Longer - 20 points
It was worse than I expected. *sigh* =(

Chocolate pumpkin muffins

makes 24 at 2 points per muffin. 1 point if you make 48 mini muffins.
1 box chocolate cake mix
15 oz canned pumpkin

Mix it up. Divide it up between 24 muffin cups. Bake about 20-25 mins.

If you can, wait for them to cool, then add a small topper of fat free canned whipped cream or fat free cool whip for no extra points. The children went NUTS over them. They are sooooooo good. =)

I discovered a marrrrrrrvelous new bread - Nature's Own Double Fiber bread is only ONE POINT for TWO SLICES!! Whooooot!

Chips and 2/3 shrimp quesadilla - 16 points
We ate out at Taco Express - or, as it's called now, Oscar's, but I prefer the old name. The shrimp quesadilla is sooooooo goooooood. I haven't had one in months and I was amazed that I was able to eat only 2/3 of it and not scarf the whole thing.
I also didn't eat the ice cream they had at church when we went to the Court of Honor - Ben made Star rank!!! =) Anyway, I didn't eat the ice cream there, and I didn't eat any at home either. Go me! =)

Used a few bonus points. It was worth it. =)

My stated goal at yesterday's meeting was to get an exercise sticker next week. Looks like I'm gonna get it. =) =)

Wednesday 26th August 2009
Emily flew back to Utah today. Bert took her because she needed to go to the airport at the same time I needed to take Ben to Seminary. I'm telling ya, this getting up at 5am daily is not easy!

Today was my 14th weigh-in. I've been going to Weight Watcher's now for 14 weeks. =) Go me! I'm so proud of my stick-to-it-ive-ness.

I'm kind of sad because when I start work I won't be able to come to my usual Wednesday morning meeting and I'll miss them. Especially because my first week at my new ww meeting will be my Week 16 celebration. *sigh* Oh well, C'est la vie.

Starting weight: 165.8lbs
Today's weight: 146lbs
Today's loss: 2.2lbs
Total loss: 19.8lbs

Next week I'll have lost 20 LBS!! =) I'll get another 5lb loss sticker. =) I'm so happy. I'll be officially half-way through my weight-loss then. =)

I think it's very interesting that I lost 2.2lbs despite the difficult week. Several parties and Emily's birthday. I did quite well despite blowing my points. I think it helped that my period was all done. =) You can look in my weight record and you pretty much know whenever I've been on a period; my weight has gone up, and then come down double the usual amount the following week. =)

Anyway, here's what I ate:

Brazillian chicken, rice and beans - 10 points
The mother of Emily's friend made it. She's from Brazil. This Brazillian chicken is SOOOOO GOOOOD! I guesstimated the points.

ff ice cream - 2 points
cereal and milk - 6 points

Total points: 20/19 points
Yeah, points look good on the surface, but once again, do you see any veggies in there????? And it wasn't nearly enough food, and certainly no nutritional balance at all. At least I got all my milks though. =)

It was parent night at Ben's school. I knew I was going to be faced with cookies galore and was worried about it. I should have been. =D I overguesstimated the amount of points I ate with cookies, but that's fine. For the FIRST TIME in my ENTIRE LIFE I put half of something in my mouth, ate it, looked at the other half and thought, "I don't want to eat this." AND I DIDN'T!!! WHOOOOT! I've never been able to do that before. I'm so happy. =) So although the points for today blew away every single one of my remaining bonus points, I count it as a triumph. =)
